Gran Torino is a film directed and played by Clint Eastwood, one of my favorite actors. Essentially, this movie is about a Korean War veteran Walt Kowalski. He despises other cultures because of his war past but throughout the movie he realizes he has a lot more in common with others than he thinks. You can watch the clip here:
This moment in the film sticks with me because it shows how things can escalate very quickly. When the scene starts, we see Walt’s front door close. I feel like this has a deeper meaning. I feel like this is the way for the director to show us how Walt is closing himself from the outside world. Later on in the scene, he tells them to “Get off my lawn” becoming one of the movie's most iconic lines. The gangbangers pull up on the teen trying to make him do things he doesn’t want to do. The teen is sitting with his sister which really stood out to me. It looked like the sister was the innocent one, the angel, and the gangbangers were trying to take the teen to do things he didn’t want to do, and they were the devils. As things escalate, Walt comes outside with his M1 Garand to see the ruckus. The M1 Garand has a lot of meaning too because as we know, Walt fought in the Korean War so that was a gun he most likely used. Once he scared the ganagbangers off, the asian teens family thanks Walt to which he responds the same thing he told the gangbangers, “Get off my lawn”.
